In the Depths of Cruising

Il cespuglio diventa il simbolo di un rifugio, l’unico luogo in cui le persone LGBTQ+ potevano incontrarsi in sicurezza in una Bulgaria segnata da una cultura di estrema destra ormai dominante. Questo progetto nasce dalla riflessione sul bisogno di non dover più nascondersi. Osservando la natura, ho cominciato a notare cespugli, foglie e piccoli elementi che sembravano celare qualcosa. All’inizio erano dettagli quasi invisibili, ma lentamente ho iniziato a collegare i punti: il cespuglio si è rivelato una potente metafora del nascondersi. Da qui, la riflessione si è estesa alla cultura gay e alla pratica del cruising, dove momenti di intimità e desiderio si svolgono spesso nascosti nella natura. Questi spazi diventano luoghi di contrasti emotivi: vergogna e piacere, amore e odio, luce e oscurità. Tutto sembra unirsi in quei momenti, tra ciò che è nascosto e ciò che si mostra. Il progetto, attraverso il simbolo del cespuglio, denuncia una realtà che limita la libertà e, al tempo stesso, celebra la volontà di rivelarsi, di vivere senza paura, di trasformare il nascondersi in gesto di resistenza e libertà.

The bush becomes a symbol of refuge, the only place where LGBTQ+ people could meet safely in a Bulgaria marked by a dominant far-right culture. This project stems from a reflection on the need to no longer have to hide. Observing nature, I began to notice bushes, leaves, and small elements that seemed to conceal something. At first, these were almost invisible details, but gradually I started connecting the dots: the bush revealed itself as a powerful metaphor for hiding. From there, the reflection extended to gay culture and the practice of cruising, where moments of intimacy and desire often take place hidden in nature. These spaces become sites of emotional contrasts: shame and pleasure, love and hate, light and darkness. Everything seems to converge in those moments, between what is hidden and what is revealed. Through the symbol of the bush, the project denounces a reality that restricts freedom, while also celebrating the desire to come out, to live without fear, and to transform hiding into an act of resistance and liberation.
